About the product
Nutmeg originated in the Moluccas, more specifically the Indonesian Banda Islands, where even the bases of the streetlights are shaped like the spice. Cultivated in South India from the late 1700’s, Malaysia, the Caribbean and in New Guinea. It is the seed of the fruit of the nutmeg tree, and is protected by a lacy covering, ‘mace’. In large quantities, nutmeg has hallucinogenic properties. Chiefly popular today in north India (especially in Garam Masala), the Caribbean, North Africa, and the Middle East. The Dutch are the biggest European consumers. Wide Grenadian cultivation of the spice led to popularity in the Caribbean, where you’ll find nutmeg in jerk marinades, ice cream, jellies and even drinks.
