About the product
Roses are grown throughout the year all over India. We favour the osa indica var. Odorata and Rosa damascene varieties of North and East India. Roses and their fragrant petals have a host of culinary applications with a long history of use. The ancient Egyptians, Persians and Babylonians, then the Romans used rose petals as decoration and celebration. The Ottoman empire, spreading to Bulgaria introduced their syrups, pastries and milk puddings. In the Middle Ages in England, sweetmeats of the royal court, like marzipan, used rosewater as a key flavouring. The culinary use of rose is largely restricted to sweet preparations (as in the innumerable Indian milk-based sweetmeats), although the dried, powdered petals are found in our Garam Masala, the Moroccan spice blend ‘Ras el Hanout’ and rosewater can be sprinkled over biryani and other lavish rice dishes.
